Jews of Galicia

Traces of centuries-long Jewish presence, culture and religion, annihilated during World War II, can be found in Krakow and in nearly each town of the Lesser Poland Province and Southern Poland.

The Lesser Poland is part of the former, so-called Galicia Province, one of the most multicultural and multireligious regions of Europe at the turn of the 19. and 20. centuries.
In 1900 every third inhabitant of Galicia was of Jewish origin, which is why this part of Poland allows to experience the exceptional character of the pre-war Jewish towns, the so-called shtetls. Jewish cemeteries, the ruins of synagogues and the empty spaces once related to Jewish life reminds us of the world that no longer exists.
Despite being only a small part of the former Galicia region, the Lesser Poland gives you an opportunity to visit numerous places of interest related to the moving history and culture of the Polish Jews. One of these are as many as 60 pre-war synagogues located in the whole area of the Polish Galicia of all 250 pre-war synagogues preserved in the area of Poland .
Without any doubt the central place along the Jewish route is Krakow. Details of sightseeing the Krakow districts of Kazimierz and Podgorze can be found here.
